Burma Ruby Oval Cut, 5.21 ct
This natural Burmese ruby is quite the seductive gemstone. It owes its charms to its sultry red hue with magenta undertones—unenhanced and pervasive throughout the stone—coupled with its ability to “fluoresce” or glow a vibrant red when exposed to sunlight. Due to its unique crystal structure, this Burmese ruby twinkles as it turns in the light, giving off internal “sparks” that look like embers from a fire. At 5.21 carats, it’s a significant weight for a Burmese ruby, while its antique oval shape has a lovely length-to-width ratio. All told, this Burmese ruby is a dramatic jewel, sure to captivate from across the room.
This ruby is certified as a Burmese ruby with no heat treatment by the American Gemological Laboratories.
For centuries, the Mogok Stone Tract of Burma, otherwise known as modern-day Myanmar, has provided the world with its finest rubies. Burmese rubies are renowned for their clarity, silk inclusions that give them a soft glow, and, of course, their vibrant color—a combination of purplish-red body color and fiery red fluorescence, with the most coveted called “pigeon’s blood.” Today, with most of the alluvial deposits in the region depleted, Burmese rubies are among the most valuable and prestigious of all gemstones.
